20th Annual Gig Harbor Turkey Trot 5K

  • Harborview Drive Gig Harbor, WA United States (map)

"[In 2002], Dr. Holmes' oldest son challenged him to run a marathon with him. Dr. Holmes, who own[ed] Holmes Chiropractic, had never participated in an organized run but accepted the challenge and started looking for training opportunities.
"I couldn't find any local organized runs so I invited some of my friends, family and patients to join me on Thanksgiving morning for a 5k run. I also asked them to bring two cans of food we could donate to the local Food Bank. I thought it would also be a good way to work up an appetite for our awaited Thanksgiving meal."

That first year 15 people participated, Dr. Holmes thought it would be great to do it again the next year. An unexpected 200 people participated. And the Gig Harbor Turkey Trot was born.

In 2019 over 3,000 people registered and participated in Gig Harbor's largest community run.

"The Gig Harbor Turkey Trot has continued to be an annual Gig Harbor and family tradition. We continue to collect two cans of food per participant which is still donated to F.I.S.H. and now also to BackPack for Kids. And the funds raised go towards college scholarships for local graduating high school seniors."

Harbor History Museum: Special Exhibition “Tinted Light: Edward Curtis’ Picture Opera

Opening November 9th – Special Exhibition - “Tinted Light: Edward Curtis’s Picture Opera”

This special exhibition features the hand-tinted slides created by photographer Edward Curtis to promote his life work, the 20-volume North American Indian. Curtis was a Seattle-based photographer most known for his striking portraits of indigenous peoples. His photography and ethnographical team’s research led to a massive record of numerous tribes throughout the North American continent. Few people know that Curtis did not get paid for his work, aside from what he could raise via these subscriptions. His “picture opera” was designed to give a glimpse into the project and secure would-be subscribers. Today, these slides remain some of the only color versions of Curtis’s noted black and white images. (Image of Kwakiutil Village 1914)

Pier Into the Night

Pier Into the Night

Guided by staff biologists and volunteer SCUBA divers, viewers will experience an underwater journey of the Salish Sea in high definition. Take a tour along the bottom of the Salish Sea from a diver’s perspective. Examine the cracks and crevices of the rocky structure and look out into the emerald green waters for the incredible sea life that calls this place home. Ochre sea stars, red rock crabs, and California sea cucumbers are often encountered and; if you are lucky, the more elusive Irish lords, stubby squid and giant Pacific octopus may make an appearance.

RSVP on Harbor WildWatch’s Facebook page for event updates or visit their website for the direct link. As always, this program is free and appropriate for all ages.

Canceled - Girls’ Night Out

For 2021, the Board of the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, hosts of the very popular annual Girls’ Night Out event, have decided to cancel the in-person experience on November 11, and will be offering a modified alternative. A fun, holiday promotion is in the works that will allow people to shop, dine, and support local while staying safely distanced throughout the holiday season – so stay tuned for information on that at https://www.gigharborwaterfront.org/, or www.facebook.com/ghgno.

This waterfront event goes all day — attendees are encouraged to grab their friends and family, and head down to the waterfront to “Shop and Dine from 10AM to 9P!” Downtown businesses come out to show, with attendees collecting an item from each stop along the way to add to their “Red Bag” of goodies.
