Digital Cocktails & Fishtales – Washington State’s Aquatic Reserves: Protecting local ecosystems through stewardship and science

Cocktails & Fishtales is Harbor WildWatch’s science-social series. Held monthly, these programs feature a scientist, researcher, or environmental artist on an ecological topic. While these programs are traditionally 21+ and held at a local taproom or venue, during the pandemic they have shifted to an online format for all ages. They continue to serve as an engaging and interactive way to learn about the environment, and bring together eco-enthusiasts from our local community… and, now, beyond. Questions and interaction are highly encouraged!

Cocktails & Fishtales are educational events. As such, Harbor WildWatch does not endorse any speaker, service, or product represented at Cocktails & Fishtales.

To access Facebook Live events, simply search Harbor WildWatch on Facebook at the scheduled time to find the live feed on our page. Pier Into the Night

Pier Into the Night

Guided by staff biologists and volunteer SCUBA divers, viewers will experience an underwater journey of the Salish Sea in high definition. Take a tour along the bottom of the Salish Sea from a diver’s perspective. Examine the cracks and crevices of the rocky structure and look out into the emerald green waters for the incredible sea life that calls this place home. Ochre sea stars, red rock crabs, and California sea cucumbers are often encountered and; if you are lucky, the more elusive Irish lords, stubby squid and giant Pacific octopus may make an appearance.

RSVP on Harbor WildWatch’s Facebook page for event updates or visit their website for the direct link. As always, this program is free and appropriate for all ages.

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to raise both money and awareness in the fight to end hunger.  In Gig Harbor, this is an annual event organized by the Altrusa Club and Foundation of Gig Harbor to raise funds for feeding children and families in our community who may otherwise experience hunger.

Did you know that 1 in every 4 children in the Peninsula School District qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, meaning they and their families are at risk of experiencing hunger?  There are a number of great local organizations who provide access to food through delivery programs and food banks.  They are primarily volunteer efforts, but food supplies require funds.  Empty Bowls raises funds to help those local organizations.  100% of the net funds raised are distributed to local organizations by Altrusa of Gig Harbor Foundation for the purchase and delivery of food.

Here is how it works:  Purchase a handmade bowl by a local artist and enjoy a simple meal of delicious soup donated by one of our premier Gig Harbor restaurants. Take your bowl home as a reminder of the empty bowls in our community. Visit https://www.altrusagigharbor.org/empty-bowls for more information.
